Rock Gardening Practice Session (Monterey)
The focus of this practice session is to expand on the skills learned in the Intro to Rock Gardening Class.
The focus of this class is playing safely and having fun in the stunning rock gardens that adorn the California coast. You will learn how to negotiate rock features with style and grace and what to do if things go wrong. We will cover strategies for paddling within rock gardens and recognizing areas to avoid. You will have the opportunity to practice essential skills including self and assisted rescues within the turbulent water of a rock garden. Students should have a solid understanding of foundation strokes as well as the ability to perform rescues. Helmets are mandatory and plastic kayaks are strongly recommended. Paddlers should be in good physical condition and be dressed and ready to swim.
Recommended Prerequisite: Comfort with wet exits, as well as basic familiarity with both self and assisted rescues, is essential. L3 Coastal Kayak Skills Development or equivalent, and recent paddling experience. Intermediate whitewater kayakers will also find their skills transferable.
Location & Timing: The class will begin at Lover’s Point in Pacific Grove and after practicing skills and strokes, we’ll make our way out explore features, weather permitting. We meet at 8:30 AM. Class begins at 9:00 AM. We will be off the water by 3:30 PM.
