Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced paddler looking to sharpen your skills, we have a clinic for you.

South Fork FAQ

Do I need my own gear?

  • No — we can provide all the gear you need: kayak, packraft or SUP, paddle, helmet, and PFD. Just bring water, snacks, and clothes and footwear you can get wet in.

What skill level do I need?

  • We offer instruction from complete beginners through advanced paddlers. Use our skills self-assessment to find the right starting point.

How far is the South Fork American River from the Bay Area?

  • About 2.5 hours from San Francisco via I-80 and Highway 50 to Coloma, CA. Worth making a weekend of it — we have camping available right on the river.

Is there camping available?

  • Yes — we offer tent camping at our base on the river for students. We also have camping gear rentals available — tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, coolers and camp stoves. There is potable water and a sink at our campsite.

When is the best time to go?

  • Spring (April–May) offers the most dynamic flows. Summer runs strong with consistent dam-regulated releases through September. Both are great — it depends on whether you want bigger water or warmer days.
