Begin Your Journey Here
Welcome to the Water!
Never paddled before? You’re in exactly the right place. At California Watersport Collective we’ve introduced hundreds of complete beginners to the water – and we know the first question is always the same: where do I even start?
Here’s how to figure that out in about two minutes.
Step 1: Pick Your Adventure Style
I want moving water and a little adrenaline. Perfect if you’re drawn to rivers, rapids, and the thrill of reading moving water. Our Whitewater Kayaking I Clinic on the South Fork American River starts from scratch – no experience needed. We also offer a Womxn’s Whitewater Kayaking I Clinic if you prefer to learn from female instructors with other women.
I want to go deep into the backcountry. Packrafts are lightweight inflatable boats that pair perfectly with hiking and camping. If you want to access wild, remote places on the water, this is your discipline. Our Packraft Skills Clinic provides you the foundation to begin your journey.
I want something fun and accessible on the river. SUP is one of the easiest ways to get on the water. We teach on the river, so you’ll get a real feel from moving water from day one with our SUP Small Group beginner classes.
I want to explore the coast and open water. Ideal if you would the ocean, bays, and scenic paddling. Our Bay Area sea kayak program offers instruction throughout the year.
Step 2: Don’t Overthink It
Not sure which one is right for you? That’s completely normal. Here’s the honest truth: most CWC students end up trying more than one discipline once they get started. Pick one that excites you the most right now and go from there.

Why Learn with California Watersport Collective?
We’re not a big resort or tourist operation. We’re a community-driven paddle sports school with over 10 years in operation, small class sizes, and instructors who genuinely care about your progression. We also believe the water should be accessible to everyone – which is why we founded Riverbound, our nonprofit outreach program.
