Kayak Instruction Lake Tahoe & Reno

Whitewater Kayak, Packraft & SUP Instruction near Lake Tahoe & Reno

If you're spending time in Lake Tahoe or Reno, the South Fork American River is practically in your backyard. California Watersport Collective offers whitewater kayak, packraft, and SUP instruction on the South Fork in Coloma, CA — one of California's premier whitewater destinations, just a short drive from Tahoe's south shore.

Already in the mountains? The South Fork is just an hour away

Coloma sits just west of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 — the same road that brought you up to the mountains. It's a natural add-on to any Tahoe trip, and the South Fork delivers a completely different kind of adventure than the lake. Head down in the morning, spend a day on the river, and be back in Tahoe for dinner.

What to expect on the South Fork

The South Fork American River runs Class II and III rapids through 21 miles of scenic Sierra foothills — excellent teaching water with enough challenge to make it memorable. We keep groups small, provide all gear, and tailor instruction to where you are as a paddler. No experience necessary.

Clinics & Programs available

We offer whitewater kayaking, packrafting, SUP, guided river trips, and corporate retreats on the South Fork throughout the season — April through September. Browse by discipline below or visit our South Fork American River page for a full overview.

South Fork FAQ

Do I need my own gear?

  • No — we can provide all the gear you need: kayak, packraft or SUP, paddle, helmet, and PFD. Just bring water, snacks, and clothes and footwear you can get wet in.

What skill level do I need?

  • We offer instruction from complete beginners through advanced paddlers. Use our skills self-assessment to find the right starting point.

How far is the South Fork American River from Lake Tahoe?

  • About an hour from South Lake Tahoe via Highway 50 west to Coloma, CA — the same road you came in on.

How far is it from Reno?

  • About 90 minutes from Reno via I-80 west to Auburn, then Highway 49 south to Coloma.

Is there camping available?

  • Yes — we offer tent camping at our base on the river for students. We also have camping gear rentals available — tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, coolers and camp stoves. There is potable water and a sink at our campsite.

When is the best time to go?

  • Spring (April–May) offers the most dynamic flows. Summer runs strong with consistent dam-regulated releases through September. Both are great — it depends on whether you want bigger water or warmer days.

Spring and summer clinics are booking now — spots are limited.
